Chinese Hou crowned Olympic champion in the category up to 49 kg

Olympic Games 2021 Weightlifting Category up to 49 kg

In an impressive manner Zhihui Hou (94 kg/116 kg) took the first gold of these Olympic Games in weightlifting this Saturday and clearly put the competition in their place.

Even though the dominance of the Chinese was to be expected, Hou showed an impressive competition with six valid lifts and thus only left the silver medal to her main competitor Chanu Saikhom Mirabai (87 kg/115 kg). The Indian athlete failed on each of her third lifts but maintained her ranking well ahead of Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah (84 kg/110 kg).

The young Belgian Nina Sterckx (81 kg/99 kg) did not have the best day and probably had to pay tribute to the strong weight loss due to the weight category change. But Sterckx fought and scored one valid lift in the snatch and the clean and jerk, which brought her to fifth place in the end. At the age of 18, she can still chalk up this performance as a conciliatory premiere and hope for the continued existence of weightlifting in the Olympic program. Because then Sterckx would again have a realistic chance of a top ranking in Paris in 2024.

The competition was much more tragic for the top US talent Jourdan Delacruz. The 23-year-old Texan was on course for a medal after the snatch but failed three times in the clean and jerk to reach her starting weight of 108 kg.

For the second European Anais Michel (78 kg/99 kg) the competition went much more conciliatory. With four valid lifts, the Frenchwoman finished seventh in the overall ranking and can be happy about the first top eight rankings for her home country France.
