Danny Casey has been running the NY Weightlifting Academy for over seven years and is also the head coach. Over time, the Academy has produced some successful weightlifters, including several national champions. It was born from the idea of creating a gym exclusively dedicated to Olympic weightlifting. “I have worked with some very successful US coaches for many years as well as participated at competitions and now I am passing on my experience and know-how to our passionate athletes.” Danny’s goal is to train everyone with the necessary quality and technique to achieve the desired goal.

Weightlifting in the U.S. has taken off in recent years. After multiple world champion and Olympic medalist from 1947 to 1964, Norbert Schemanski, U.S. weightlifting experienced a drought of success. A new era has now been started with Mattie Rogers, who has won medals at three consecutive World Championships.

“Weightlifting in Germany has a great potential and I personally enjoy learning from it.” Danny is particularly excited about Max Lang. He followed his YouTube channel right from the beginning and was immediately excited about his technical skills and how he was progressing from year to year. In 2018, he was invited to the “Meissen Cup” by Max and Eric Schneidenbach. “I got the opportunity to commentate live on the competition and was deeply impressed by all the attention and also the small details that each athlete as well as coach and the whole competition brought.”

Since then, German weightlifting has had a huge influence on Danny’s training design and philosophy on the sport. “When it comes to structuring of the workout schedules and working on technique, the German system is optimally designed – we can take a big leaf out of that and benefit.”

This was also recognized by USA Weightlifting. In order to benefit from the know-how of German Weightlifting, they organized a joint preparation for the World Championship in 2018. Both national teams trained together in Leimen under optimal conditions and subsequently competed in the World Championships in Turkmenistan. Michael Vater, currently U20 national coach of the German Weightlifting Federation, has also been invited to national coaching courses of USA Weightlifting and shared his know-how.

It remains exciting to see whether the USA will be able to match the performance of the German team at future Olympic Games and how successful the era around Mattie Rogers and Katherine Nye will continue.
