Failed attempts while training

We all love the feeling of a new personal record or how much easier heavy attempts feel an improvement in your training which may be related to a better technique.

But there are two sides to every coin: On their road to an improved technique, most athletes experience technically incorrect attempts or failed attempts in training.

How to best handle them or the consequences is very different from athlete to athlete, but there are a few things every athlete should keep in mind. Just like establishing a correct technique, it is also possible to train an incorrect technique. Trying to handle too heavy weights with an incorrect technique and missing the attempts multiple times is not only frustrating, but the body also starts to memorize the wrong movements. Take a situation probably known to most athletes: you fail at a certain weight two or even three times, then you reduce the weight for a lighter lift, but even this just does not seem to work out. There is a very simple reason for that: muscle memory not only saves the correct movements, it also memorizes the wrong and incorrect attempts.

If you lose the barbell forwards, backward or you push the weight, it is mostly because of a poor technique. With the help of a coach and lightweight, the mistake should be addressed and evaluated. On paper, this sounds plausible and easy, but on the other hand, we know it is not always easy to apply changes in technique immediately. Sometimes there are other external factors for a bad training as well. Stress at work, having a bad day or simply too little food intake can lead to not being able to meet the demands of a training plan. On days like this, you have to listen to your body, and carefully evaluate if it is the right decision to continue with technical training, or if it would be better to instead continue with some basic strength and athletic training. It is important to be focused while training technique and on some days, this is just not possible. Some days just are the way they are and this is definitely not the end of the world. 

Continuously trying the same load over and over again without success is also not good for your mental training progress. Don’t exceed three failed attempts at an exercise. 

Weightlifting is not only physically exhausting, it is also a mentally exhausting sport. Sometimes bad phases dominate the training just to be followed by an improvement. Failed attempts are part of the training, just like personal records. Still there are consequences from negative experiences and you should try to make them as rare as possible. Always keep the following sentence in mind: 

The worth of successful, correct attempts is way higher than the worth of the load.
