„It’s The Taking Part That Counts“ is the Olympic motto and there is nothing you can really say against it. But it seems that the meaning of it is not clear to everybody. Lately, I heard this sentence from athletes and coaches, after a competition which didn’t go so well.
The athlete didn’t match its standards and this is countered with a: „ Already the participation is a success“. This may even be true in one or another way, not everybody can win and the qualification for a certain competition is sometimes a challenge itself and needs to be appreciated. But how did the German Rapper „Kontra K“ said: „ participation is everything, says the looser.“

A competition is a measurement of the individual athletic performance. That there can only be one winner is the nature of a competition.
But if you define the word win for yourself, can a participation already be a win? I don’t think so. Only the ones who give their best and use all their personal abilities should be satisfied. „participation is everything“ is an excuse after a loss or a bad competition. It is only a lie to yourself and won’t help you gain good self-confidence or a positive mindset.
