Training camp in Tenerife – balance between training and recovery

From April 10 to 21 the German top athletes went to an eleven-day training camp in Tenerife. There, Lisa Marie Schweizer and Max Lang had the opportunity to fully focus on training and recovery.

An eventful time lies ahead for Lisa Marie Schweizer and Max Lang. First of all, this year’s Bundesliga final will take place next Saturday, with Schweizer lifting for Speyer and Lang for AC Mutterstadt. At this competition, Max also wants to reach the standard for the European Championships taking place from May 25 to June 5 in Tirana, Albania.

In order to be well prepared for these upcoming competitions and to be able to fully focus on training, the German top weightlifters – including Schweizer and Lang – went to a training camp in Tenerife from April 10 to 21. In the Maritim Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, the lifters found the best training conditions, even if it was sometimes a bit cramped and chaotic in the rooms due to other athletes. “We had to be flexible with our training times, but luckily we didn’t have to travel there because the training room was on the premises of the hotel. The federation even had new plates and barbells sent there, so we were well equipped,” says Weightlifting Shop athlete Schweizer.

With the sun in the sky and the sea around the corner, the lifters went well-motivated into the training sessions and had the opportunity to recover afterward. “In the training camp you don’t have to worry about anything and we had sun, sea, and a pool in Tenerife, so you can recover very well after an intense training,” said Lang. For Schweizer, these conditions offered the optimal balance between training and recovery. “It helps me a lot when we move the training camp to the sea and the sun shines every day. Then the mood is different and it’s not hard for me to motivate myself for training.”

But even though the two Weightlifting Shop athletes were able to fully focus on training in Tenerife, it was unfortunately not possible for them to approach maximum loads there as well. “Unfortunately, my cycle didn’t exactly play into my cards, which is why it wasn’t possible to go full throttle in every exercise, but luckily there are still a few weeks until the European Championships,” said Schweizer, who has already qualified for the European Championships.

Max Lang will beim Bundesliga-Finale am Samstag die EM-Norm erreichen.

The 29-year-old Lang from Mutterstadt, meanwhile, approached his training camp sessions a little more cautiously. “My knee is doing well so far, but the injury is not yet completely gone. Accordingly, we adjusted the loads a bit. We have worked as we could, but the primary goal was also that the pain decreases and on this path I am.” So the tension would slowly come back and if then also the spryness would be there again, the European Championship standard, which Lang wants to meet at the Bundesliga final, should not be a problem.

In the meantime, however, the German athletes have arrived back home and are now concentrating on the upcoming competitions at their home training facility. “As nice as it always is in other places, I simply feel most comfortable at home and can focus best on the next training!”, says Schweizer.
