GUIDE

What to Look for When Buying a Jump Rope?

The Right Cable Material

The choice is yours: Coated steel cables are the perfect, durable all-rounder. For maximum competition speed, go for bare steel cables without a coating—they are extremely fast but will fray quickly on hard ground without a jump rope mat.

Ball Bearings & Rotation

For a smooth, trip-free workout, high-quality ball bearings inside the handles are crucial. They ensure the cable spins without friction and won't tangle, even at peak speeds during a WOD.

Handle Ergonomics & Adjustability

Look for non-slip handles (e.g., knurled aluminum or wrapped with grip tape) so the rope stays secure even with sweaty hands. The cable should also be quick and easy to adjust to your height.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About JUMP ROPES

A speed rope featuring a thin steel cable is your ultimate weapon for double unders, offering lightning-fast rotation and minimal air resistance. A classic PVC fitness jump rope is slightly heavier. This gives you better feedback in your wrists, making it perfect for beginners, boxing drills, or traditional cardio intervals to warm up.

We highly recommend jumping with coated steel cables on gym flooring, rubber mats, or specialized jump rope mats. Rough asphalt acts like sandpaper and will wear down the protective plastic coating over the steel core over time. On softer surfaces, your rope will last virtually forever.

As a golden rule of thumb: Your height + 90 cm. For a quick test, simply stand on the center of the rope with one foot and pull the handles straight up. For intermediate jumpers, the handles should reach just below the armpits. You can find a detailed centimeter chart for every height and an exact 4-step guide in our blog post “How to Adjust Your Jump Rope Length.”
